8 Things to Do in Eastbourne (And Where to Stay)

Eastbourne has quietly become one of the South Coast's most charming destinations—and I'm not just saying that because I live here. Between the Victorian elegance, the stunning chalk cliffs, and genuinely brilliant walking routes, there's something special about this corner of East Sussex. Whether you're planning a family holiday or need a comfortable base for work in the area, here are seven things that'll help you fall in love with Eastbourne too.

1. Walk the Iconic Beachy Head and Seven Sisters

Let's start with the obvious—because Beachy Head is famous for good reason. These dramatic white cliffs are genuinely breathtaking, especially early morning when the light hits just right. The circular walk from Birling Gap to Beachy Head is about three miles and takes you along the cliff edge with views that'll have you stopping every few minutes for photos. Insider tip: park at the Beachy Head Countryside Centre rather than the main pub car park—it's free, and you can grab excellent coffee at the café before you set off.

2. Spend an Afternoon on Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier isn't just a pretty postcard shot—it's a properly enjoyable afternoon out. The Victorian structure has been lovingly maintained and offers traditional seaside entertainment: arcade games, fish and chips, and that distinctive pier atmosphere. The camera obscura at the end is surprisingly fascinating, giving you a live panoramic view of the seafront. Visit mid-week if you can; weekends get busy, especially during school holidays.

3. Explore Towner Eastbourne Art Gallery

This award-winning gallery punches well above its weight. The building itself is architecturally striking, and the exhibitions rotate regularly with both contemporary works and pieces from their impressive permanent collection. Entry is free to most exhibitions, and the ground-floor café does excellent lunch options. It's the perfect rainy-day alternative, and you're supporting genuinely excellent local arts programming.

4. Hike Through Friston Forest

Just west of Eastbourne, Friston Forest offers lovely woodland walking that's completely different from the coastal paths. The Seven Sisters Country Park connects here, and you can plan routes ranging from gentle 30-minute strolls to full-day hikes. In spring, the forest floor fills with bluebells—absolutely worth timing your visit for late April or early May if possible. There's ample parking at the Exceat visitor centre.

5. Visit the Redoubt Fortress and Military Museum

History enthusiasts shouldn't miss this circular Napoleonic fortress right on the seafront. The Redoubt was built in 1810 to defend against French invasion and now houses fascinating military collections spanning 500 years. The ramparts offer lovely sea views, and the curator-led talks (usually on Sundays) bring the history to life brilliantly. Check opening times before visiting as they vary seasonally.

6. Take Tea at the Bandstand

The Bandstand on Eastbourne's seafront is the real deal—a beautifully restored Victorian structure that hosts live music throughout summer. Even without a concert, sitting here with an ice cream watching the world go by is quintessential Eastbourne. The promenade gardens are immaculately maintained, perfect for an evening stroll after dinner.

7. Browse the Independent Shops in Little Chelsea

The area around South Street and Seaside Road—affectionately called "Little Chelsea"—is where locals actually shop. You'll find independent boutiques, antique shops, the excellent Camilla's Bookshop, and several cafés that haven't been designed for Instagram but serve brilliant coffee anyway. Provisions deli does exceptional sandwiches for beach picnics.

8. Visit the Beach Deck Cafe

Stunning views of the sea can be enjoyed whether you want to stay on the deck area, or stay inside. The glass frontage helps keep the wind off you and keeps you warm. The food is tasty also! Address:13 Royal Parade Near Treasure Island, Eastbourne BN22 7AE England
